Planning a hotel stay? Become Elite For Free

Being elite helps. I'm not a big elite person, but I still enjoy the upgrades and benefits of elite status when I can. Usually you have to work hard to get and keep elite status, but here are some free ways to get a taste of elite status.

Each program has different benefits for different levels, but if you're staying somewhere, you may as well be elite if you can. Now that I use, it's real simple to sign up up for a new program. All you need to do, is add your login information once, and it stays there.

Free 180 day trial for Platinum status. You can sign up until the end of the year, so if you have a stay planned, sign up within 180 days of your stay.

The main benefits of Platinum status are hopefully getting an upgrade, free internet, and 15% bonus points. If you stay 5 nights during the 180 day trial you will stay Platinum through February 2012, or 15 nights to achieve Diamond status until then.

Best Western
They are offering a status match from any other hotel program. So if you get Hyatt platinum status, you should be able to get it with Best Western too.

Accor - A|Club
Free Gold status. Use this promotion code when signing up: CMBANKACLUB.

I don't know if it still works, but you can try to get upgraded to gold status. If it doesn't work, lot's of people had luck just by calling them and asking to be upgraded to gold.

If you're Platinum, here's some good news: starting March 1st, you will get free internet in your rooms.

It's an airline, not a hotel, but it's still a free offer for Silver elite status. See here.

I signed up for it when I posted about it, and for some reason they just threw in a free 1,000 points as well. I don't know what I can do with it, but I'm not complaining.

Some Freebies

Some free samples I requested today:
Uni-ball Super Ink Pen
Crest Whitestrip Samples
Axe Shower Gel Sample
Nikwax Tech Wash Travel Gel - You need to take a quiz for this one.
And for those collecting Pampers points, here's a code for 30 points : GTGPLAY2USA2010

If you like free samples and the sort, you should periodically check the free stuff threads at Slickdeals and Fatwallet. Best to have a junk email address/phone number for all these freebies. Also, read the comments to see if the site is a scam.

While we're on the topic of free stuff, Craigslist is a great resource. They have a free section, where people give away all types of things. Change the city to your location.

They are also giving 35% cashback at T-Mobile, search for 't-mobile' for 35% cashback. T-Mobile is also offering a free $25 refill card with most of their prepaid phones.

Pay Less When You Shop Online: Get Cashback

If you don't use cashback sites when shopping online, you are losing out. Cashback sites are an easy way to earn some extra money. For a better understanding on how cashback works, read this post.

In short:
If you want to earn cashback when making a purchase at a website, first go to a cashback site (Sites like MrRebates, Bing, Fatwallet, Ebates ($5 signup bonus) and BigCrumbs etc.), and from there click the store you want.

Most cashback sites offer anywhere between 1% and 10%. If you make a $100 order, you'll get anywhere between $1 and $10 back. You can get even up to 30% cashback! It really adds up, and doesn't take much time. Remember, all this is besides for the cashback or points you get from your credit card!

Generally speaking, the last site you click from, before completing the purchase, will be considered the place that sent you to make the purchase. So, if you click on a deal from SlickDeals, and then before paying, you go to a cashback site and click through to the store again, you should get the cashback for the purchase.

There are two cashback sites that I started using regularly: MrRebates and Bing. I use Ebates and Fatwallet as well. Depending on how often you shop online, and the size of the purchase, you might just want to stick with Bing and MrRebates for now.

MrRebate's cashback has been from the highest lately. Different cashback sites might have higher cashback for different stores, but I found MrRebates to be overall the best. This is today, things can always change, and it also depends on where you shop.

They have a $5 sign up bonus. You can't take out the money until you have at least $10 in your account. So, in order to get the bonus, you'll need to first earn an additional $5 in cashback.

Once you sign up, you can refer your family and friends to MrRebates. Anybody you refer, you get 20% of their cashback. No, it doesn't take away from their cashback, it is in addition to whatever they receive. And you can't see where they shopped or what they purchased.

Lately, Bing, a Microsoft product, has been offering some real generous cash back. You can earn up to $2,500.00 a year with Bing. Most of the time you get the cashback in your account within a few days, and is available for withdrawal after 60 days. eBay cashback is instantly deposited into your PayPal account.

Bing has two cashback methods: The Regular Method, and The Search Method. You need to sign up for an account at in order to earn cashback.
  • The Regular Method:
Go to the store section of, find the store you want to shop at, click through and shop.
  • The Search Method:
Go to and search for things that will bring up the sponsored ad with the cashback. Often you can just search for the stores name, and other times you need to search for something specific. This method works only for some specific stores.

Some of the amazing Bing cashback deals in the past using the search method: 35% cashback at eBay, 25% at Macy's and 20% at Walmart. Check out this SlickDeals thread for current cashback amounts, just remember that the cashback amount can change as fast as a few times a day.

If you can't find any keyword that will give you cashback for Walmart, try the link from this page.
More Information:
  • Double Dipping:
    Try at your own risk:
Double dipping is when you click from one cashback site, then click from another, and try to get the cashback from both sites. With most cashback sites, one will cancel out the other. With Bing however, it seems to work together with any other cashback site. Try it at your own risk. And you definitely have no one to complain to if it doesn't work for you.

  • Shopping Around
If you are interested, before making a purchase, you can check each cashback site to see who has the highest cashback. Often when a deal is posted on SlickDeals, somebody will mention where to get cashback from.

  • Cashback Not Showing Up
Sometimes that cashback doesn't show up in the account. A quick message to the cashback site is usually all that is needed.

  • Using Coupons
With Bing, if you use a coupon code at a website, it might invalidate the cashback. This coupon issue is just with Bing, not with other cashback sites.

  • Large Cashback Amounts
If it's a real large cashback amount, I will remove the items from my cart and add them again after clicking through the cashback site. I have always received the cashback even without doing that, but with large cashback at stake, I want to be extra sure.
In addition, if you refer someone to MrRebates by 02/14/10, MrRebates will give you a $5 bonus for each person you refer, as long as they make a purchase within the first 30 days of registering.

Charles Schwab Visa - Some Great Features

I have been using the Charles Schwab Visa for a few months now, and really like it. See more information on this card, here and here.

Here are some of the main things I like about this card:
1) Unlimited 2% cashback on everything you buy
2) No foreign transaction fees (most cards charge around 3%)
3) Free ATM withdrawals using the ATM card (The 2% cashback gets deposited into a separate 'brokerage' account, and for that account you get an ATM card)
4) No annual fee

Some advanced reasons:

Pending Charges - Temporary Authorizations
With other cards that I have, I can't see the charge until it actually goes through, which often takes a couple of days. I do see the overall credit availability go down, so in theory I can calculate the amount of the charge based on the credit availability going down, but that can get very confusing, especially with multiple charges. Often, I want to know if the charge went through, and how much I was actually charged.

With Charles Schwab, you can see the pending charges online. The minute I leave a store, I can go online and see how much the store charged me. Not always can you see the charges right away, cause often stores will only charge the card when they ship the item. Amazon, for instance, puts a $1 hold on your card, and then when the order ships, they charge the full amount. Which, by the way, can be an issue if you are purchasing exactly up to your credit limit, or if you are using your full prepaid credit card balance.

Say you shop at a site, but you don't want them to have your credit card number.
You go online to and generate a one-time use credit card number, and that's the number you give to the company instead of your real credit card number.

You can also set the expiration date for the temporary number, say 03/2010, along with the total amount that can be charged to this number. Another thing you can do, is limit how much each charge can be. Say you want the merchant to be able to make recurring charges of $10 for the next 10 months, you set the limit of each payment to $10, and the number of monthly payments to 10.

American Express
All that being said, I still use an Amex for any purchase that there is a possibility that I will have issues with the purchase, and need to take advantage of Amex benefits.

Free BMI Silver status

Update: You can try this link for silver status for a year. It says that the offer is for "members of the Institute of Directors Northern Ireland", but it seems to work for everyone. Update 2: BMI is asking for proof that you are a member, so you might be better off with the free trial.

BMI (British Midland Airways) is offering a three month trial for silver status. This makes you Star Alliance Silver as well. If you earn 4,000 miles, basically any Star Alliance flight, within the first three months, you get to keep the silver status for the rest of the year.
